Here are instructions for skimming a document in the Skimcast mobile app. Skimcast supports the following file types: HTML (web pages), PDF, .docx (word processor documents), .pptx (presentations), and .txt (plain text).
There are several ways to skim a document in Skimcast:
New Skim button
On the Featured Skims page or the My Skims page, click the New Skim button to create a new skim. The New Skim button appears as a plus (+) inside of a circle at the bottom right of the Featured Skims page and the My Skims page. A menu will appear with four options:
Enter a URL
The first item in the New Skim menu is “Enter a URL”. Paste or type a URL in the box that appears and click the “Skim” button at the bottom of the screen.
The second item in the New Skim menu is “Paste content”. Enter text in the box that appears and then click the “Skim” button at the bottom of the screen.
The third option in the New Skim menu is “Upload Screenshots”. Select this option and select the Screenshots photo albums. Then select the screenshots that you wish to skim in the order in which they should appear in the document. Then click the “Skim” button at the bottom of the screen. Skimcast will automatically create a PDF of your selected screenshots. You can view or share the PDF from inside the Skim.
Take a Photo
The last option in the New Skim menu is “Take A Photo”. Touching this option will cause the camera screen to appear, showing you the view from the rear camera of your device. Align the device so that the page to be scanned is contained in the box on the screen. Then press the round camera button to take the photo.
You will be asked to approve your photo or retake it. If you are satisfied with your photo then click the check mark at the bottom left. To retake the photo, click the X at the bottom right of the screen. Choosing to retake the photo will take you back to the camera screen where you may take a new photo by pressing the round button at the bottom.
Once you have approved a photo, a list of thumbnails will appear displaying all of the pages of your current document. To take an additional photo, click the plus (+). When you are finished taking photos, click the “Skim” button at the bottom.
Skimcast will automatically create a PDF of your Photos. You can view or share the PDF from inside the Skim.
Photos may also be taken, approved, and skimmed using a Bluetooth keyboard.
Share to Skimcast
You can send a document to Skimcast from a third party app. Launch an app containing a document that you wish to skim and click the app’s “open in” option or the app’s “share” option. A list of some of your installed apps will appear. Select Skimcast. Then open the Skimcast app and your document should be in your My Skims list.
If Skimcast does not appear in your list of apps that are available to receive your document, then click “More” and select Skimcast as one of the apps to be used to read your documents. You can even move Skimcast to the front of the list to make sharing faster. You can follow this tutorial to enable Skimcast for document sharing on an iOS device.
